Lagos has received a major boost to its electricity transmission capacity following the Federal Government’s commissioning of upgraded facilities at four transmission substations across the state.

The upgrades at Ijora, Apapa Road, Alausa and Lekki have added approximately 360MW of transmission capacity, with the projects expected to improve bulk electricity delivery to homes, businesses and industries within the networks of Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said at the commissioning that the projects were part of efforts to address long-standing transmission constraints and improve the reliability of electricity supply.

“These infrastructures have been here for over 25 years. What we are doing is commissioning new power transformers in Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki transmission substations. This is important as it will increase our wheeling capacity and also improve our delivery to end-users,” he said.

The Ijora transmission substation received two new 100MVA transformers, increasing its installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA and providing an additional 112MW.

At Apapa Road, two 60MVA transformers and modern gas-insulated switchgear were installed. The intervention increased the substation’s capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA, representing an additional 96MW.

The upgrade at Alausa involved replacing an existing 30MVA transformer with a 100MVA unit. As a result, the substation’s total capacity rose from 135MVA to 205MVA, adding about 56MW.

The project also increased electricity allocation to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to 80MW.

Meanwhile, major upgrades were carried out at the Lekki transmission substation, where TCN commissioned two 60MVA transformers, one 300MVA transformer and nine additional 33kV feeders.

According to the project details, the intervention doubled transformation capacity at the 132/33kV level from 120MVA to 240MVA.

Tegbe said the new capacity at Alausa could serve approximately 70,000 households, or about 180,000 people.

He further said the Lekki upgrade was expected to improve electricity supply for around 100,000 customers, representing an estimated 400,000 people.

The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, disclosed that the projects received support from the World Bank and JICA, while Shanghai Electric participated in their execution.

The government expects the upgraded substations to ease transmission constraints and strengthen electricity supply to consumers across Lagos.
