83 Nigerians Repatriated From South Africa, Arrive in Lagos
83 Nigerians have arrived in Lagos from Johannesburg after a repatriation exercise, with private individuals funding their flight tickets.
LAGOS — A total of 83 Nigerians have returned home from South Africa after a repatriation exercise supported by private individuals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday night, saying the Nigerians arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg.
Two officials from the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg accompanied the returnees during the journey.
The ministry said the cost of the return flight tickets was covered by good-spirited private individuals who contributed to ensuring that the Nigerians could return safely to the country.
On arrival, the returnees were received on behalf of the Federal Government by Ambassador Haruna Ali-Gombe, Director of the African Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The 83 Nigerians were later handed over to relevant government agencies for documentation and profiling ahead of their reunification with their families.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerians abroad and supporting their safe return when necessary.
It also commended the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, the private sponsors and other agencies involved in receiving and reintegrating the returnees.
