Osogbo Palace Clash: One Dead After Thugs Confront Davido’s Security Team
Police say one person was killed after a clash between suspected thugs and Davido’s security team during Governor Adeleke’s visit to Osogbo palace.
OSOGBO — A 60-year-old man has reportedly been killed following a shooting incident in Osogbo after suspected cult members clashed with security personnel attached to Afrobeats singer Davido during Governor Ademola Adeleke’s visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo’s palace.
The governor had arrived at the palace for a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler, accompanied by his nephew, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
A confrontation reportedly erupted between two groups outside the palace, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The governor’s security personnel reportedly responded by firing shots into the air and deploying tear gas to disperse the suspected thugs. The intervention enabled the governor’s convoy to leave the palace safely.
Davido later addressed the incident in a post on X, distancing himself and the governor from the confrontation.
“It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us! The pple love excellency!” he wrote.
According to DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, the trouble began when a known political thug, Adebayo Taoreed, also known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by the singer’s security details.
“The incident attracted more of his cult gang members who attempted to override the security detail which led to gun exchange,” Ojelabi said.
He added: “The thugs temporarily blocked the palace entrance but were overpowered by the security details before the convoy left the scene with Davido.”
Police sources said the suspected cult gang later moved towards Ayepe and allegedly shot Tajudeen Yusuf, aged 60, in the Ita-Olokan area.
Ojelabi confirmed the shooting and said police had launched an investigation into the incident.
The Police Commissioner (Election), Samuel Etaifo, meanwhile, said resources would be deployed to track down and arrest the suspect.
