Barcelona’s 100-point dream ended as Alavés claim narrow win
Barcelona, coached by Hansi Flick, fell short of a historic 100-point La Liga season after defeat in Vitoria.
FC Barcelona suffered a 1-0 defeat to Deportivo Alavés on Wednesday, ending their attempt to reach a historic 100-point La Liga season.
Fresh from clinching the title, Barcelona under Hansi Flick needed a perfect finish to the campaign but were beaten in Vitoria.
Ibrahim Diabate scored in first-half stoppage time to give Alavés a vital win in their relegation fight, lifting them to 15th place.
Flick rotated his squad after Barcelona’s El Clásico title-clinching win, giving debut minutes to 21-year-old defender Álvaro Cortés.
Despite celebrating their league triumph with a parade earlier in the week, Barcelona struggled to convert possession into clear chances.
The only goal came when Diabate finished after Antonio Blanco’s header was knocked back into the danger area.
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny kept Alavés from extending their lead with a second-half save, while Jon Guridi later hit the post.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Sevilla FC staged a remarkable 3-2 comeback win over Villarreal CF, overturning a two-goal deficit.
Goals from Oso and Kike Salas restored parity before Akor Adams completed the turnaround.
Salas described the win as an emotional reward for the fans, saying, “It’s an indescribable feeling, giving back to the fans all the love they give us.”
Meanwhile, RCD Espanyol ended an 18-match winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.
Coach Manolo González admitted the difficult run had been painful but expressed relief after securing a vital win to boost survival hopes.
