The Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and criminal prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Disu made the announcement on Wednesday at a press briefing held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he condemned the incident as “criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.”

According to him, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, the officer at the centre of the case, violated established procedures and Force Order 247 on the use of firearms.

“The officer at the centre of the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of established procedures and Force Order 247 governing the use of firearms,” he said.

“Let me be clear: this action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force”.

He said the officers were immediately moved to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings following the incident report.

The IGP disclosed that both the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and the Orderly Room Tribunal investigated the matter and established cases of misconduct and breach of operational rules.

He added that the panels recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other implicated officers, alongside criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” Disu said.

The recommendations, he noted, have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification.

Reiterating the Force’s stance, Disu said the misconduct did not represent the Nigeria Police Force.

“The NPF is an institution built on the rule of law, and we have zero tolerance for lawlessness within our ranks. No uniform is a license to kill,” he stated.

He expressed condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi and assured them of justice.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community of the late Mene Ogidi… justice will not only be done, but it will also be seen to be done,” he said.

The IGP also appealed for calm, stressing the Police Force’s commitment to accountability and internal reforms.
