Cape Verde after heroic World Cup defeat

Cape Verde’s national team received a rousing welcome from thousands of fans on Sunday as they returned home following their impressive FIFA World Cup campaign and narrow defeat to Argentina.

Large crowds gathered at Praia airport waving banners and cheering the Blue Sharks after their heroic display against the reigning world champions in Miami.

The squad is scheduled to take part in a celebratory parade through the capital before meeting with the country’s president and senior government officials.

Competing in their first-ever World Cup, Cape Verde captured global attention by advancing to the knockout stages and challenging more established football nations.

Their memorable run ended in a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina in the Round of 32 after pushing the defending champions to the limit.

The emotional homecoming came as the island nation also celebrated its Independence Day.

“After the heroes who fought for our independence, we now have these heroes — the Blue Sharks,” supporter Edmilson Correia, 28, said while celebrating at the airport.

Speaking after landing, head coach Bubista said the team had demonstrated determination and quality throughout the tournament.

“We demonstrated that our World Cup qualification wasn’t down to luck. We showed hard work and resilience, and we left the United States with our heads held high,” he stated.

Fans dressed in blue attempted to catch sight of stars such as Sidny Lopes Cabral and goalkeeper Vozinha as excitement spread across the airport.

Twelve-year-old Ivan Goncalves said he especially wanted to see Cabral because of his “fabulous goal against Argentina”.

Cape Verde’s Minister of Culture and Sports, Antonio Duarte, praised the players and coaching crew for enhancing the country’s international image.

He applauded the team for “cementing Cape Verde’s status as a great nation”.

Even after the loss to Argentina, celebrations continued across Praia as supporters honoured the team’s inspiring World Cup journey and determined performance against one of football’s strongest sides.

Cape Verde, a country of roughly 500,000 people, celebrated 51 years of independence from Portugal on Sunday after spending five centuries under colonial rule.
