France Honours Outgoing UK Prime Minister Starmer with Legion d’Honneur

French President Emmanuel Macron has awarded outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer the Legion d’Honneur for his leadership on European security, Ukraine and UK-France relations.

Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has received France’s highest national honour, the Legion d’honneur, from President Emmanuel Macron in recognition of his leadership on European security, Ukraine and UK-France cooperation.

Macron presented the award during a ceremony in Paris on Monday while Starmer was attending a summit of Ukraine’s allies.

The French presidency said Starmer became the first serving British prime minister to receive the prestigious distinction.

The recognition comes as Starmer prepares to step down from office after reportedly losing the confidence of his Labour Party following several domestic policy U-turns that affected his popularity.

Although his standing at home has declined, Starmer continues to enjoy considerable respect among international leaders for his support for Ukraine and efforts to rebuild Britain’s ties with Europe.

He is expected to hand over leadership of the Labour Party and the government to former minister Andy Burnham in the coming days.

Starmer also attended France’s Bastille Day military parade on July 14 as Macron’s guest, alongside leaders from countries supporting Ukraine.

While presenting the honour, Macron hailed the British leader’s role in promoting European stability.

The French president praised Starmer’s “personal leadership” and “commitments” to “the security of Europe, Ukraine, the bilateral relationship” as well as his “decency.”

Labour’s return to power under Starmer in July 2024 ended 14 years of Conservative rule and helped reset Britain’s diplomatic engagement with European partners, particularly France.

The renewed cooperation followed years of tensions stemming from Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union after the 2016 Brexit referendum.
