Manchester United have bolstered their midfield with the signing of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a £36 million transfer.

The Red Devils announced on Tuesday that the 29-year-old has signed a contract running until June 2031, ending his time at Villa Park after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders.

Fresh from leading Belgium to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Tielemans described his move to Old Trafford as a dream realised.

“Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football,” he said.

“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”

The midfielder joins Manchester United after an outstanding season with Aston Villa, where he contributed seven assists, helped the club win the UEFA Europa League and scored the first goal in the final against Freiburg.

According to Manchester United, Tielemans also ranked among the Premier League’s leading midfielders for line-breaking passes and progressive ball distribution while under pressure.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox said the Belgian international’s experience, quality and winning mentality made him an important addition to the squad.

“Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years,” Wilcox stated.

“He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United. His consistency is exceptional, and he will add composure, creativity and leadership to our squad as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”

Tielemans is the latest player to join Manchester United during the summer transfer window after the arrivals of Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow, as the club intensifies efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign.
