Hon. Unyime Idem: A Model Politician in the Midst of Self-Seeking Politics-By Aniekpeno John Inyang

As Nigeria continues to grapple with leadership crises, underdevelopment, and public disillusionment with politics, Hon. Idem’s example serves as a reminder that model politicians still exist—leaders who prioritize human capital, inclusiveness, accountability, and sustainable development over fleeting political gains. His achievements provide a blueprint for how genuine, people-centered leadership can transform not only a constituency but an entire state, inspiring a new generation of political actors across Nigeria.

Hon. Unyime Idem

In a political environment where public office is often reduced to personal gain, empty promises, and divisive politicking, Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem, member representing Ukanafun and Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has emerged as a rare example of purposeful, people-driven leadership. At a time when Nigeria is plagued by leadership failure, lack of accountability, and gross underdevelopment in many constituencies, Hon. Idem’s track record in the 10th National Assembly stands as evidence that integrity, vision, and genuine service to the people are still achievable in public office. His two years in office have shattered the status quo, setting a new benchmark for what true representation should look like.

One of the most commendable aspects of Hon. Idem’s leadership is his strategic focus on human capital development, particularly through employment facilitation and skill acquisition. Rather than indulging in the traditional political practice of distributing short-term handouts for political loyalty, he has facilitated the recruitment of over 1,000 Akwa Ibom indigenes into strategic positions in federal ministries, departments, and agencies, including the military and paramilitary forces. This is not just about giving jobs; it is a calculated effort to close the historical marginalization of Akwa Ibom in national structures and to ensure that his people ascend to positions where they can influence policy and attract development to the state. His vision is futuristic—he believes that in the next decade, many of these beneficiaries will rise to become directors, permanent secretaries, and top managers, strengthening the state’s presence and reducing the overdependence on state government interventions.

Hon. Idem’s approach to youth empowerment through international training opportunities further distinguishes him from the typical Nigerian politician. Through his sponsorship program, over 100 young people from Akwa Ibom have been sent abroad, particularly to China—a global hub for technological innovation—for cutting-edge skills acquisition. Governor Umo Eno’s nickname for him, “The China Man,” reflects this visionary trajectory. These overseas training programs are more than symbolic gestures; they are life-changing experiences equipping young people with the tools to compete globally, drive innovation locally, and stimulate economic growth within their communities. Beneficiaries return with not only technical skills but also with international connections, entrepreneurial knowledge, and access to global markets. This reflects a deep understanding by Hon. Idem that sustainable development begins with an empowered, skilled, and competitive citizenry.

Moreover, Hon. Idem has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to infrastructure development that directly improves the lives of his constituents. His achievements include the construction of multiple roads, bridges, market facilities, solar-powered street lights in over 200 communities, vocational skills centres, e-learning and ICT hubs, and boreholes to ensure access to clean water. In stark contrast to many politicians who focus only on projects that yield quick political returns, Hon. Idem’s interventions cut across essential sectors that address education, entrepreneurship, transportation, technology, and community development. Particularly notable is his establishment of digital learning centres for persons with disabilities and his construction of a bungalow for a blind widow, acts that show inclusiveness and compassion in governance—traits sorely lacking in much of Nigeria’s political space.

What sets Hon. Idem apart even further is his active engagement in legislative duties and governance beyond constituency projects. He currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, Deputy Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee investigating alleged abuse of ₦2.3 trillion TETFUND, and Leader of the Akwa Ibom Caucus in the House of Representatives. His legislative productivity is impressive—sponsoring 22 bills and 32 motions within just two years—proving that he is not only visible at home but also impactful at the national level. His work reflects a rare blend of constituency development and national legislative responsibility, positioning him as a bridge between grassroots needs and federal policymaking.

In an era where many politicians are primarily focused on personal enrichment, political godfatherism, and media appearances, Hon. Unyime Idem represents the kind of leadership Nigerians yearn for—a leader who sees politics as a tool for societal progress, not personal profit. His transparent processes, long-term development vision, and relentless efforts to empower the most vulnerable demonstrate that politics can indeed serve the people.
