The successful conduct of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election has once again demonstrated the importance of collective security and the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in safeguarding democracy. As the people of Ekiti State exercised their constitutional right to choose their leader, the atmosphere across the state remained peaceful, orderly, and secure, a development that deserves national commendation.

At the heart of this achievement was the proactive leadership and strategic planning of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, whose commitment to election security ensured that every eligible voter had the opportunity to participate freely without fear, intimidation, or disruption.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the election was the visible and effective deployment of security personnel across the state. All 2,445 polling units in Ekiti State had a minimum of three police officers stationed at their locations as early as 6:30 a.m. This early deployment sent a strong signal that the security agencies were fully prepared to protect lives, electoral materials, and the integrity of the electoral process.

Security presence was notably high at polling units across the state as voters turned out to determine the future leadership of Ekiti. The confidence inspired by these security arrangements played a significant role in encouraging voter participation. Many residents expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere and the professionalism displayed by security personnel throughout the exercise.

The large voter turnout witnessed during the election was not accidental. It reflected the high level of confidence that voters had in the security architecture put in place by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies. When citizens feel safe, they are more willing to engage in democratic processes, and that confidence was evident in the impressive participation recorded across the state.

Special commendation must also go to the Commissioner of Police in charge of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election, Dr. Abayomi Shogunle. His coordination of security operations was exemplary. Through meticulous planning, effective deployment, and constant monitoring of the security situation, he ensured that law and order were maintained throughout the election period.

Dr. Shogunle’s leadership on the ground complemented the vision of the Inspector-General of Police and translated policy into effective action. The seamless coordination among security agencies, prompt responses to emerging situations, and professional conduct of officers contributed significantly to the overall success of the election.

The exercise was largely peaceful, orderly, and well conducted across the state. There were no major security breaches capable of undermining the credibility of the election, and voters were able to cast their ballots in an atmosphere of calm and confidence.

As Nigerians continue to strengthen democratic institutions, the Ekiti experience offers valuable lessons on the role of security in electoral processes. Free and fair elections thrive where citizens feel protected and where security agencies discharge their duties with professionalism, neutrality, and commitment to the rule of law.

For providing the leadership that made this possible, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu deserves the appreciation of all lovers of democracy. Likewise, Dr. Abayomi Shogunle and the officers deployed for the election deserve recognition for their dedication and service.
