IPOB Backs Kanu’s Expulsion of Former DOS Leaders Over Alleged Disloyalty
IPOB says the expulsion of former officials was necessary to protect the movement and support Nnamdi Kanu’s unconditional release.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has justified the expulsion of members of its dissolved Third Directorate of State (DOS), alleging that the former officials betrayed detained leader Nnamdi Kanu and acted against the interests of the movement.
Deputy Head of the newly constituted Fourth DOS, Solomon Egbo, made the allegations in a statement released on Monday, describing Kanu’s decision as “painful but necessary.”
Egbo alleged that members of the dissolved leadership repeatedly breached the IPOB Constitution and Code of Conduct while failing to support Kanu during his detention.
According to him, the expelled officials neglected the welfare of detained pro-Biafra agitators and ignored directives concerning medical care for Kanu while in custody.
He further claimed that the former DOS leadership frustrated fundraising efforts initiated by pro-Biafra supporters to address Kanu’s health challenges.
The IPOB official also accused the expelled members of undermining legal attempts to secure Kanu’s release by attacking his legal team and maintaining ties with former IPOB lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor despite directives cutting ties with him.
Egbo alleged that the former leadership failed to effectively defend the October 13, 2022 Court of Appeal judgment that discharged Kanu and questioned the jurisdiction of Nigerian courts after his rendition from Kenya.
He claimed the affected officials instead promoted narratives blaming Kanu’s family for subsequent legal developments, which he described as false and intended to challenge the IPOB leader’s authority.
The statement further accused the expelled officials of making false allegations against Kanu’s brothers, disregarding repeated directives from him, and discouraging supporters by suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would only release Kanu if he renounced the Biafra agitation.
Egbo also alleged that the former officials removed officers appointed by Kanu without authorisation, altered IPOB’s oath of office to promote loyalty to individuals, and attempted to establish parallel structures within the movement.
According to him, the actions of the dissolved leadership were part of a sustained effort to weaken IPOB and undermine Kanu’s influence.
“The expulsions are indefinite and take immediate effect,” Egbo said, insisting that the affected individuals no longer speak for IPOB or the Biafran cause.
He called on supporters at home and abroad to unite behind the newly inaugurated Fourth Directorate of State under the leadership of Chris Nwaọgụ, while maintaining that IPOB’s central objective remains Kanu’s unconditional release and the actualisation of Biafra.
The latest development comes amid increasing internal divisions within IPOB following Kanu’s dissolution of the Third Directorate of State and the inauguration of a new leadership structure.
