‘It’s Just a Rumour’: Kwankwasiyya Rejects Reports of Kwankwaso’s Exit from NDC

The Kwankwasiyya faction has pushed back against reports claiming that its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is considering leaving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following alleged disputes over candidate selections in Kano State.

Responding to the speculation on Monday, faction spokesperson Habeeb Saleh Mohammed dismissed the claims as unverified rumours with no basis in internal party discussions.

“Well, this is still a rumour. It is just being circulated on social media,” Mohammed said.

He defended the conduct of the faction’s primaries, stating that the process complied fully with electoral regulations and the schedule set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The reality is that we conducted our primaries according to the law and in line with the INEC timetable. We held our primaries on May 29, just as was done across the country,” he said.

Mohammed explained that extensive consultations and consensus-building efforts preceded the primaries, resulting in candidates emerging for various positions without significant opposition.

“Before that date, there were processes that led to consensus and candidates emerged for different positions. There were no complaints from party members or aspirants during that period,” he stated.

He noted that the exercise had been completed successfully and that the list of candidates was forwarded to the party leadership for further action.

“I believe we conducted the process successfully and submitted the list to the party. It is now left for the party to do what it considers appropriate,” he added.

Addressing the rumours directly, Mohammed said the issue of Kwankwaso leaving the NDC had never been discussed within the faction.

“From our own perspective, these are issues we keep hearing here and there. There was never a time when it was discussed that our party leader, Kwankwaso, is leaving the party. That is our position,” he said.

The clarification comes amid reports that several candidates aligned with the Kwankwasiyya bloc were replaced by the NDC in Kano State over an alleged breach of a 60-40 power-sharing formula. The reports cited a document reportedly endorsed by the state’s NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.
