Kebbi: Two Soldiers, Chinese National Killed in Suspected Lakurawa Attack
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed two soldiers and a Chinese national in an attack on construction workers in Maiyama, Kebbi State.
BIRNIN KEBBI — Suspected members of the Lakurawa armed group have killed two soldiers and a Chinese national during an attack on construction workers in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack reportedly took place on Thursday after the assailants infiltrated the area from Kebbe Local Government Area in neighbouring Sokoto State and launched a surprise assault on the workers.
SP Bashir Usman, spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview.
He said those killed were part of a team of construction workers working on the Badagry Super Highway project in the state. According to him, the two soldiers were providing security for the Chinese national and other workers when the attackers launched the assault.
Usman said the attack left two soldiers and the Chinese national dead, while some other individuals were injured.
“Yes, the attack occurred, but the terrorists are not from Kebbi State but infiltrated the state through a village with a border to Kebbi State,” he said.
He said the identities of the deceased soldiers could not be made public because they were members of the military rather than the police.
Describing the incident as “barbaric and unwarranted,” the police spokesperson said security agencies had begun coordinated efforts to track down those responsible.
He added that security operatives were currently pursuing the suspected Lakurawa members behind the attack.
Lakurawa, considered a relatively new armed group, has been reported to operate across parts of north-western Nigeria and the border region with the Niger Republic. The group has previously been associated with attacks in the area.
