North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, has pledged unwavering support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, describing the conflict as a “just sacred war” and expressing confidence in Moscow’s victory.

State media reported that Kim made the remarks while hosting Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov in Pyongyang, amid growing military cooperation between the two countries.

He stated that North Korea “will as ever fully support” Russia’s efforts to defend its sovereignty and security interests.

Analysts say Pyongyang has supplied weapons and troops to assist Russia, while Moscow has provided economic and military support in return.

Talks between both sides included plans to deepen defence cooperation, with Russia proposing a partnership framework extending from 2027 to 2031.

Kim and visiting Russian officials, including Vyacheslav Volodin, attended a memorial ceremony honouring North Korean soldiers who died in the conflict.

At the event, Kim paid tribute to their “unrivalled bravery” and “noble sacrifice,” participating in a burial ceremony marking their “last heroic moments.”

He also praised Russia’s recent gains, referring to the “brilliant war results in liberating Kursk.”

In a separate message, Russian President Vladimir Putin commended North Korean troops for their “extraordinary bravery and genuine devotion.”

Estimates from Seoul suggest around 2,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed in the war, with reports indicating troops were instructed not to be captured alive.
