At least five people have been killed after a gunman opened fire in Kyiv on Saturday, with several others injured and some taken hostage inside a supermarket before the attacker was killed by security forces.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least five deaths had been confirmed, while 10 people were admitted to hospital with injuries and trauma following the incident in a residential district of the capital.

“The attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated,” Zelensky wrote on social media, extending “condolences to the families and loved ones” of those killed.

He further confirmed that “four hostages have been rescued.”

According to footage circulated by the UNIAN news agency, which has not been independently verified by AFP, a man was seen firing a weapon at close range near apartment buildings.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said the suspect later moved into a supermarket, where gunfire was heard.

Police confirmed that special forces were deployed to the Holosiivskyi district in southern Kyiv as the situation unfolded.

Officials said the motive behind the attack is still unknown, with Zelensky stating that “all the circumstances are being established” and urging a swift investigation.
