Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday to become the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 at the World Cup.

The breakthrough came in injury time when captain Stephen Eustaquio fired home in the 92nd minute at the SoFi Stadium.

The match had looked set for extra time in a closely contested last-32 encounter between two nations appearing in the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time.

Eustaquio’s late strike ensured the co-hosts advanced to the next stage while South Africa’s campaign came to an end.

Canada will play either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16.
