Japan struck late to deny the Netherlands victory as the two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Group F fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match, played before 69,285 fans in Texas, saw Japan twice come from behind, including a dramatic equaliser in the 88th minute.

Following a tightly contested first half, the Netherlands took the lead six minutes after the restart when Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from Ryan Gravenberch’s delivery.

Japan responded quickly through Keito Nakamura, who capitalised on space in the Dutch defence to level the score with a low finish.

The Dutch restored their advantage in the 64th minute courtesy of a brilliant individual effort from Crysencio Summerville. The winger beat his marker before curling a precise shot into the bottom-right corner.

As the match entered its closing stages, the Netherlands looked set to claim all three points, but Japan had the final say.

A late corner caused confusion inside the Dutch penalty area, and Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada was credited with the equaliser after the ball took a decisive deflection.

The Netherlands had started brightly, with Donyell Malen testing Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki early and continuing to pose a threat throughout the first half.

Japan gradually grew into the game and remained dangerous despite spending long periods under pressure.

Both teams created additional chances after the second-half substitutions, but neither could find a winning goal.
