Let’s Learn to Appreciate People’s Work – Education is Not a Waste -By Adebayo Blessing

And to all the youth who are reading this, just remember: education is never wasted. It won’t make you rich immediately, but it makes you a better person. It gives you knowledge, confidence, and good sense. It makes you special, even if you don’t have a job yet.

Cultural diversity in Nigerian schools - youths in university

I saw something this morning on Facebook. A young fellow posted a picture of his NYSC jungle boots with the comment: “Money can’t buy this, you have to earn it.”

Let us be truthful – he was not lying to us. That caption is not so much about the boot, but about stress, discipline, sleepless nights, exams, and all the hard work a student must go through before graduating and putting on that boot. That boot is a testament to all that he went through.

But when I went to see the comment section, I was surprised. Some people, whom I believe are also graduates, were making nasty and uncalled-for remarks like, “What money cannot buy does not exist,” or “Wait till you finish and face the real world.”

Yes, we understand it all about Nigeria’s challenges. We understand that even with NYSC, it is possible to not have a job. So many individuals have completed service yet still stay home struggling. So, why do we always dampen individuals’ little joy of celebration with negativity?

Sometimes, simply say “congratulations.” Allow people to celebrate their achievement. That jungle boot might not cost much, but it indicates that the individual has worked hard. It is something to be proud of.

Let us think carefully before we type. Not all comments need to be sarcastic or “deep.” Some moments simply require applause and encouragement, not cruel words or eye-rolling.

Let us praise individuals when they are making progress. Let us give others a boost with our words. Life is already difficult enough don’t add more suffering with negative comments.

And to all the youth who are reading this, just remember: education is never wasted. It won’t make you rich immediately, but it makes you a better person. It gives you knowledge, confidence, and good sense. It makes you special, even if you don’t have a job yet.

So never let anybody shame you into thinking that your education is worthless. It isn’t. You earned it and that alone is something to celebrate.

Respect the grind. Appreciate schooling. Celebrate individuals.
