A British court has sentenced Norbert Maiksner, 49, to life imprisonment with a minimum of 24 years for the killing of his partner, Nigerian national Frances Obiefuleh, 45.

The court heard that Maiksner murdered Obiefuleh in April last year at her residence in Havant, Hampshire, by wrapping tape around her face.

He was convicted of murder and child cruelty by a jury at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday and formally sentenced on Monday.

The case came to light when Maiksner was found walking along the hard shoulder of the M40 in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, where he told a highways officer to alert police and confessed to the killing.

Police from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said he admitted responsibility and told officers “that it was all a dream and that he wanted to wake up”.

Sentencing him, Mr Justice Murray told the court: “No sentence that I pass today can possibly reflect the value of Frances’s life or in any way offset the depth of grief and sense of loss of her family and everyone else who loved her.

“The depth of the pain and grief that they have suffered as a result of your crimes cannot be fully understood by those who have not experienced such a tragedy.”

During the trial, which began on March 15, Maiksner refused to attend proceedings or engage with the court.

Prosecutor Paul Cavin KC said a post-mortem examination found that Obiefuleh died from smothering, with injuries linked to compression of her neck and chest.

Following the verdict, her family paid tribute, calling her “kind, intelligent, and resourceful” and a “caring and deeply loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend to many”.

“She was a devoted mother and beautiful in every sense of the word,” the family said.
