Massimiliano Allegri Rules Out Italy Return, Focuses on AC Milan Project

Allegri confirms he will stay at AC Milan, ruling himself out of contention for the vacant Italy national team position.

Massimiliano Allegri has dismissed speculation linking him to the Italy national team job, saying he is committed to continuing his work at AC Milan.

The Milan boss was widely mentioned as a leading candidate, alongside Antonio Conte, to succeed Gennaro Gattuso, who resigned after Italy failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Serie A clash with Verona, Allegri said: “My career speaks for itself: changing jobs often isn’t part of my DNA.”

Allegri, who previously managed Milan from 2010 to 2014, enjoyed a successful spell at Juventus before returning to coaching the Rossoneri in 2021 after a break.

“I like working in a club that’s managed as a business and should be managed that way,” he said. “I like working and seeing progress. We can’t win the Champions League in two years, but you need to have that ambition because if you don’t think about the future you stay stuck in the past.”

He added that he remains in regular contact with Milan’s hierarchy regarding transfers: “We’re in constant contact, I’ve given my suggestions for summer transfers and the club’s management will work on that.”

Allegri currently has Milan sitting third in Serie A, on track for Champions League qualification. They are five points ahead of fifth-placed Como but have lost three of their last four league matches.
