Vedat Muriqi scored in stoppage time to give Mallorca a surprise 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in La Liga on Saturday, denting the visitors’ title challenge ahead of their clash with Bayern Munich.

Despite a late equaliser from Eder Militao, Madrid were undone in the closing moments when Muriqi fired home to secure a crucial win for the hosts.

The defeat leaves Madrid four points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who were due to play Atletico Madrid later on Saturday.

Manager Alvaro Arbeloa rotated his squad ahead of the upcoming Champions League quarter-final, starting with Vinicius Junior on the bench.

Madrid struggled to create clear chances early on, though Kylian Mbappe came closest, only to be denied twice by goalkeeper Leo Roman.

Mallorca capitalised when Manu Morlanes broke free in the box and converted Pablo Maffeo’s cross to give the hosts the lead.

In the second half, Madrid increased the pressure, with Arbeloa introducing Vinicius, Jude Bellingham and Militao, who returned from injury.

Militao eventually equalised with a powerful header from a corner taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold, raising hopes of a comeback.

However, Mallorca struck back in stoppage time as Muriqi beat Andriy Lunin to seal victory with his 18th goal of the season.

The win lifts Mallorca further away from relegation danger, with players celebrating a memorable result with their fans.
