Nigerian, Amos Dangut, Becomes WAEC Registrar and CEO

Nigerian education expert Dr Amos Dangut has assumed office as the 14th Registrar and CEO of WAEC, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has named Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, a Nigerian, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

Dangut takes over from Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and will serve a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031.

According to a Thursday statement signed by WAEC Headquarters’ Head of Public Affairs, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Dangut assumed duty as the Council’s 14th Registrar on October 1, 2026.

His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s international governing board at the Council’s 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, the new Registrar has academic qualifications spanning agriculture, animal science and education administration. They include a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991, an MSc in Animal Science in 1994, a PhD in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.

Dangut entered the education sector in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner. Four years later, he joined WAEC as a staff member.

Since joining the Council, he has held several positions across different departments and offices. These include Assistant Registrar, Test Development Division, Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller, Yola; Controller, Post-Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator, Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar and Head of National Office.

WAEC described him as an experienced test developer and administrator who has spent more than two decades working in examination management.

During his time as Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dangut promoted the use of Information and Communications Technology in examination processes and was involved in major digital initiatives.

Among the innovations introduced under his leadership were Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems supporting examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

His professional record includes a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006. He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his NYSC year.

Dangut has served on the boards of NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB and Grange Educational Foundation. He has also represented WAEC on the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

He has written for national and international journals and delivered papers at several conferences. He is currently the West African Sub-region’s Regional Representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).
