Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, has died after sustaining critical injuries during a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Adaobi was reportedly wounded on June 29, 2026, when Russian aerial bombs hit the Kholodnohirskyi district of the city, just days before her graduation.

She was first treated in Kharkiv before being moved to Germany for further medical attention. However, she passed away on Sunday, July 5.

In a tribute, Kharkiv National Medical University described her as a hardworking and compassionate student.

“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the university said.

The institution noted that doctors in both Ukraine and Germany worked hard to save her life but were unable to overcome the severity of her injuries.

“Everyone sympathized, helped and hoped for her recovery, but they could not save her life,” the statement added.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office also paid tribute to the late student, saying medical personnel “fought for her life until the very end.”

Adaobi had studied at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020 and had completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University.

According to reports, she and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were travelling to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike happened.
