NSC Confirms New Deal for Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will remain in charge of Nigeria’s national team after agreeing fresh contract terms with the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by NSC chairman Shehu Dikko following a meeting involving NFF president Ibrahim Gusau and top football administrators.

Negotiations over Chelle’s future had been ongoing for months, with his previous deal scheduled to end in 2026.

According to Dikko, the new agreement includes a salary increase for the Franco-Malian coach as well as financial support for his backroom staff, whose wages were reportedly previously paid by Chelle himself.

“I can confirm to you that we have reached a new term with the coach. We are going to increase his money and also take care of his assistants who are helping him,” Dikko stated.

“And there are other benchmarks that we have put on the table, and I’m sure the coach will be very excited about it.”

The NSC also revealed that Chelle’s role has been expanded beyond the senior national team, with the coach now expected to handle Nigeria’s U-23 side.

“We have also discussed how we can build for the future,” Dikko said.

“In that aspect, we also agree with the coach and the NFF that the coach should take care of the U-23 national team.”

While officials did not disclose the exact duration or financial details of the contract, the decision signals confidence in Chelle’s leadership after guiding the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Chelle’s additional assignment will involve leading the U-23 team’s push to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking Nigeria’s attempt to return to the competition for the first time since Rio 2016.
