NYSC Gets New Uniform, Graduation Ceremony as FEC Approves Overhaul
FEC has approved comprehensive reforms for the NYSC, including a graduation ceremony, skills-based assignments and revamped orientation camps.
The Federal Executive Council has approved far-reaching reforms for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), including a redesigned uniform, a new graduation ceremony and a technology-driven mobilisation process.
Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande disclosed the approval on Monday, describing it as the first holistic reform of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.
“For over five decades, the NYSC has remained a powerful symbol of national unity and service. Today, we have taken a bold step to preserve that legacy while preparing it for the future,” Olawande said.
According to him, the reforms are intended to modernise the NYSC and make it more focused on skills development, productivity and youth empowerment in line with President Bola Tinubu’s economic vision.
Key changes approved by the council include safer, risk-sensitive deployment for corps members and a revamped six-week orientation programme centred on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and specialised career training.
The reforms also introduce skills-based primary assignments linked to corps members’ academic qualifications and career paths.
In another major change, the traditional Passing Out Parade will be replaced with a graduation ceremony, while corps members will also receive redesigned uniforms aimed at reflecting professionalism and national pride.
The government further approved a new governance structure that places civilian leadership in charge of operations, with the military retaining responsibility for security support.
Improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system were also endorsed.
Olawande said the reform initiative began in 2025 following consultations involving the Ministry of Youth Development, Ministry of Education and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination.
He noted that the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development had been directed to begin legal amendments to the NYSC Act and related regulations.
“This is more than a reform of an institution. It is an investment in Nigeria’s greatest asset—our young people,” the minister added.
