President Bola Tinubu, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and the Nigerian Bar Association have strongly condemned the killing of 28 people in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, pledging that those responsible will face justice.

The deadly attack, which occurred on Palm Sunday, has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity.

In a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the attackers as “heartless cowards” and warned that such acts were aimed at provoking further violence.

“Anyone who will sneak under the cover of the night and kill defenceless citizens… is a heartless coward. By attacking soft targets in Jos, their objective is not only to cause harm but also trigger a spiral of reprisal attacks and further bloodletting,” he said.

The President directed security agencies to track down the perpetrators and urged the media to avoid framing the violence along religious lines. He also called for improved intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.

“I urge our security agencies to be more proactive… All the remaining abductees from Kahir village must be rescued immediately,” he stated.

Tinubu also praised Governor Mutfwang and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for their crisis response efforts.

Governor Mutfwang, in a statewide broadcast, described the incident as tragic and reaffirmed the state’s resolve.

“It is with a heavy heart… following the tragic security incident… which led to the loss of 28 innocent lives,” he said.

“Plateau State will not succumb to fear or intimidation. We shall emerge stronger, united, and resolute in our commitment to peace.”

He revealed that security agencies had been mobilised, a 48-hour curfew imposed, and a suspect arrested.

“The enemies of peace unleashed this senseless attack at about 7:30 p.m.,” he added, assuring that all perpetrators would face justice.

The governor also pledged government support for victims, including medical care for the injured and assistance for bereaved families.

The NBA, through its President Afam Osigwe, described the killings as “gruesome” and deeply disturbing.

“That this tragedy occurred on Palm Sunday… makes the incident even more heartbreaking. A day meant for prayer… was instead turned into a day of fear, bloodshed, and mourning,” the statement read.

It warned that failure to hold perpetrators accountable could erode public trust and embolden further violence.

Opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, also criticised the recurring attacks, urging authorities to move beyond condemnation to decisive action.

“It is long past the time for outrage without action… The continued slaughter of innocent citizens cannot become our new normal,” Atiku said.

Kwankwaso described the killings as evidence of “failure of leadership,” stressing that the situation must be treated as a national emergency.

Sunday’s attack in Angwan Rukuba left 28 people dead and several others injured, further highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
