Oyo Crisis: N1bn Impeachment Allegations, Assembly Rift and Palace Tensions Shake Ibadan

Claims of a N1bn impeachment plot and internal Assembly divisions rocked Oyo, with Governor Makinde intervening to restore calm.

Oyo State witnessed a week of intense political turmoil as allegations of a N1 billion impeachment plot, internal Assembly divisions, and claims involving the Olubadan palace converged to threaten stability in Ibadan.

Key figures in the unfolding crisis included Governor Seyi Makinde, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and former Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose.

The crisis erupted during a PDP caucus meeting in the State House of Assembly that devolved into a heated confrontation.

“What began as a routine caucus engagement quickly spiralled into a serious confrontation,” a source revealed, noting deep divisions among lawmakers.

While some legislators resisted moves to remove the Speaker, others were reportedly aligned with efforts to change the Assembly leadership.

Simultaneously, claims surfaced of a plot to impeach Makinde, allegedly backed by financial inducements running into N1 billion.

Florence Ajimobi denied any involvement, stating: “These allegations are entirely false, baseless, and a deliberate act of disinformation.”

Speaker Ogundoyin confirmed he was offered money but rejected it.

“I was offered monetary inducement, but I declined without hesitation because no amount of money can buy my conscience,” he said.

He reiterated his loyalty to the government, adding that he would not support any destabilising agenda.

Insiders suggested the Speaker himself may have been the primary target, with his alleged governorship ambition unsettling political rivals.

“They are trying to put him in a position of distrust with the governor so they can take over his position,” a source said.

Governor Makinde’s intervention proved decisive, as he summoned lawmakers and urged unity.

“I can tell you authoritatively that the governor has resolved the matter and unity has returned to the House,” another source said.

At the same time, Fayose alleged a separate plot involving the removal of the Olubadan.

“Whatever I say is either because I have the right information or I am privy to certain activities,” he claimed.

But Oba Ladoja dismissed the claims, saying: “Most of what we hear is hearsay,” while expressing confidence in a peaceful resolution.

Although calm has returned following Makinde’s intervention, analysts warn that the crisis highlights ongoing power struggles and unresolved tensions within Oyo’s political system.
