Alaafin Owoade of Oyo

The recent Oyo Obaship amendment bill has been generating a social media frenzy and online dispute. I have read the back-and-forth arguments. The applauding, indifferent, and disapproving opinions

The fear of many regarding the bill is that the bill may be driven by extraneous considerations and political motives rather than a genuine desire to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.

One would think that since the controversy of supremacy had died a natural death since the time of former Governor Otuba Christopher Alao Akala, the issue of managership should have been settled forever. Today, the Chieftaincy Amendment bill has ignited another battle for political and cultural supremacy among our royal fathers (Obas).

However, if the crisis triggers, it might definitely constitute a significant bane to the unity and progress of Oyo State. I think nothing is too much to sacrifice for the sake of the unity and progress of the pacesetter state.

What time demands from our kings now is not a return to the fragmented glory of ancient pride but a renewal of unity among themselves.
