Oyo’s Obaship/Chieftaincy Amendment Bill: A Threat To The Peaceful Coexistence Of Our King -By Adesina Julius

Alaafin Owoade of Oyo

The recent Oyo Obaship amendment bill has been generating a social media frenzy and online dispute. I have read the back-and-forth arguments. The applauding, indifferent, and disapproving opinions

The fear of many regarding the bill is that the bill may be driven by extraneous considerations and political motives rather than a genuine desire to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.

One would think that since the controversy of supremacy had died a natural death since the time of former Governor Otuba Christopher Alao Akala, the issue of managership should have been settled forever. Little did we know that the controversy would be exhumed to cause disunity among our revered kings.

Today, the Chieftaincy Amendment bill has ignited another battle for political and cultural supremacy among our royal fathers (Obas).

However, if the crisis triggers, it might definitely constitute a significant bane to the unity and progress of Oyo State. I think nothing is too much to sacrifice for the sake of the unity and progress of the pacesetter state.

Without unity and cordial relationships among the Oyo’s traditional rulers, a solid foundation for socio-economic development might be difficult to achieve in the state. Ego and envy cannot build a future. Respect and cooperation can.

Conclusively, I enjoin our Obas to join hands together in unity for the peace, progress, and stability of Oyo State rather than continue the age-long tradition of superiority battles.

What time demands from our kings now is not a return to the fragmented glory of ancient pride but a renewal of unity among themselves.
