Many Nigerian youths are going through difficult times due to insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship and the limited opportunities available to young people. Thousands of graduates from different institutions are out there searching for legitimate ways to make a living and build a meaningful future.

It is unfortunate that some youths have become involved in internet fraud, which is a serious crime that must be addressed. However, the actions of a few individuals should not lead to every young Nigerian being treated as a criminal or a suspect.

A young person who owns a car, builds a house, dresses well or lives a comfortable life should not automatically be labelled an internet fraudster. Appearance, financial status or lifestyle should never be the sole basis for suspicion. There are many hardworking and legitimate young Nigerians who have achieved success through honest means.

The Nigeria Police Force has an important responsibility to protect citizens and enforce the law. However, in carrying out this responsibility, officers should respect the dignity and fundamental rights of every individual. Before embarrassing, harassing or arresting a person, proper verification and investigation should be conducted. A respectful conversation and professional approach can help prevent innocent citizens from being wrongly accused.

The government should also strengthen measures that protect young Nigerians from unlawful harassment and ensure that any officer who unjustly violates the rights of an innocent citizen is held accountable. Where appropriate, victims of proven unlawful treatment should be provided with access to justice and compensation.

Nigerian youths are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for fairness, dignity and opportunities. Many are struggling to survive in an economy where the cost of living is high and decent employment is difficult to find.

The fight against internet fraud should continue, but it must be carried out professionally and based on evidence, not assumptions. Every young Nigerian deserves to be treated as innocent until proven guilty.

Our youths need opportunities, encouragement and protection. They should not have to live in fear of being embarrassed or harassed simply because of their age, appearance or achievements.
