State Duma Roundtable on Russia-Africa, July 15, 2024

In recent years, Russian-African economic cooperation has experienced a noticeable revival, opening up new opportunities for both sides. In the context of globalization and the rapid development of the world economy, Russia and African countries are finding more and more common grounds that can lead to mutually beneficial projects and long-term partnerships. Cooperation between Russia and Africa has long historical roots, dating back to Soviet times, when the USSR actively supported many African countries in their struggle for independence and development. In modern Russia, this course towards partnership continues and intensifies. Russia is actively seeking to expand its presence on the African continent, which is famous for its rich natural resources and growing markets. Africa, with its vast reserves of natural resources, including oil, gas, diamonds and metals, is of significant interest to Russian investors. In turn, African countries see Russia as a reliable partner capable of offering advanced technologies, investments and experience in various sectors of the economy, from energy to agriculture and mining.

On July 15, 2024, a working meeting of the International Affairs Committee was held in the State Duma of the Russian Federation, dedicated to the topic “Russia – Africa: Prospects for International Economic Cooperation”. The meeting was attended by deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and delegations from Benin, Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Rwanda, representing the new Russian-African Business Club. Louis Gowend, President of the Russian-African Business Club, proposed organizing an annual international B2B business forum – “Russia-Africa Expo 2024” to strengthen trade ties and familiarize entrepreneurs from Russia and Africa with the products and business. The initiative received support, and the first such event is scheduled for October 15-16, 2024 in Moscow. The annual international B2B business forum – “Russia-Africa Expo 2024” will be an important event for strengthening economic ties between Russia and Africa. Organized by the Russian-African Business Club, the forum will provide a unique platform for business negotiations and exchange of experience. Over the course of two days, forum participants will discuss current issues and identify areas for further cooperation, as well as conclude new contracts and agreements.

The main goal of the forum is to increase trade turnover between Russia and African countries by mobilizing key participants and creating a favorable business environment. Forum participants will be able to establish new commercial ties and strengthen existing socio-cultural relations. African entrepreneurs will gain access to technology and investment to expand production and purchase modern equipment for agriculture and processing. The forum will also be a place to discuss logistical and financial issues related to international transactions, and to become familiar with Russian legislation in the field of trade. The forum program includes conferences organized jointly with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russia, an exhibition, round tables, business and government meetings, and cultural events. The event will end with a gala dinner, providing an opportunity for informal communication and establishing partnerships. An important part of the forum will be thematic discussions devoted to issues of sustainable development, innovation and digitalization, which are key drivers of growth in the modern world.

Russian-African cooperation has significant potential for both sides. For Africa, this is an opportunity to diversify exports and find new areas for investment – a chance to attract the necessary resources to modernize the economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life of the population. An example of successful cooperation is the recent opening of new Russian enterprises and joint projects in Africa. Russia is involved in the development of deposits, construction of infrastructure facilities and the implementation of energy projects. In turn, African countries gain access to Russian technology, investment and expertise, which contributes to their economic growth and development.

For African entrepreneurs seeking to enter the Russian market, it is important to understand the specifics of doing business in Russia. The Russian market offers many opportunities for the export of agricultural products, which are in high demand due to their quality. Products such as coffee, cocoa, tea, wine, nuts and fruits can find a wide range of consumers in Russia. The cosmetics industry is also of considerable interest, especially in light of the growing demand for natural and organic products. The tourism industry, souvenirs and handicrafts from Africa can also attract the attention of the Russian consumer, who is looking for exotic and authentic goods.

To successfully conduct business in Russia, it is important for African entrepreneurs to take into account knowledge of local legislation, compliance with quality and certification standards, as well as cultural features of negotiations. The forum will provide a unique opportunity to obtain the necessary first-hand information, meet with Russian colleagues, discuss possible projects and establish mutually beneficial cooperation. Particular attention will be paid to training seminars and master classes that will help African entrepreneurs better understand the specifics of the Russian market and avoid possible mistakes.

In the context of Russia’s growing interest in African markets and prospects for the development of bilateral trade and economic relations, participation in the annual international B2B business forum – “Russia-Africa Expo 2024” will be an important step towards strengthening and expanding business ties. The organizers are confident that the forum will open new horizons for all participants and will become the foundation for a successful and long-term partnership.

Russian companies are also interested in expanding their presence in African markets, where there is significant potential for growth and development. Africa, with its rich natural resources and fast-growing economies, offers many opportunities for investment and cooperation in various industries. The annual international B2B business forum, Russia-Africa Expo 2024, will be a logical continuation of the long-standing historical tradition of cooperation between Russia and Africa and will allow participants to deepen and expand existing ties. In the context of globalization and digitalization, the world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and events such as this forum play a key role in strengthening international relations and promoting sustainable development. Participation in the forum will provide a unique opportunity not only to exchange experience and knowledge, but also to establish new business contacts that can lead to long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation.

In the context of global economic changes, Russian-African cooperation is becoming one of the key factors in sustainable development. The partnership between Russia and Africa allows not only to solve current economic problems, but also to lay the foundation for long-term growth and prosperity. Russian-African economic cooperation is on the rise and has great potential for further development. The Russia-Africa Expo 2024 Forum will be an important milestone in the history of these relations, providing participants with a unique opportunity to exchange experience, knowledge and establish new business contacts. The interaction between Russia and Africa promises to be fruitful and mutually beneficial, opening up new horizons and new platforms for economic growth and prosperity for both sides.
