Should We Believe The Nigerian Government In Their Fight On Climate Change?, by Musa Muhammad

Climate change is becoming a danger in Nigeria especially for local farmers even though the climate change is a global challenge not only in Africa or Nigeria its global challenges however, the Nigerian government shows less or no concern on the issues of the alarming danger. Nigerian farmers are facing a series of challenges from soil degradation, erosion, shortage of rainfall that lead to excessive hunger in the country.

With this alarming, the government playing with the lives of people in the country,  we’re at the forefront of hunger and starvation in this country. During the 2022 planting season, between August and October, Nigeria witnessed one of its worst floods in a decade. According to Nigerian authorities, more than 600 people died and more than 1.4 million people were displaced. And we are still not yet recovered despite all this, the government finding a way to remove fuel subsidies local farmers cannot afford to purchase farming equipment, and our rate of hunger is increasing day by day because we cannot feed ourselves in the country as records say,35.4% of Farmers are collecting loans to feed the country but because of the unexpected heavy rainfall,  and land degradation they cannot afford to pay the debt back and the government sat and did nothing . Where is the evidence that says  we’re fighting against climate change? No, we’ve not seen anything positive in the country.

Moreover, oil company this country dig oil and leave it like that without purifying the place, You cannot extract something from the soil and not return something to it and expect things to go the way you want no it doesn’t work like that, these are the things government need to do finding solutions to our local farmers purifying our places when oil dig out from ground and plantation of trees to absurd the heat so that the plants will yield properly.

Lastly, my message to the Nigerian government: Climate change is a life or death matter and should not be seen as an opportunity for politicking or for economic speculation, Nigerian government must act very quickly to come up with the proper solutions to this existential challenges so that local farmer will farm fresh foods and vegetables, and also find the solution to those who receive carbon dioxide because Statistics shows that 54 percent of Nigerian children living with climate change because of the company that is located to our communities and crude oil that is in the soil where those company extracted.

If the government looks at these issues properly with careful consideration they will effectively come up with lasting solutions that bring a positive impact into the  lives of the masses which will end the crisis of food security, inflation, and land degradation.
