SDP Calls for Gbajabiamila’s Resignation Over PFIPC Controversy

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, to step down over allegations linked to the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Addressing journalists after the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, said stepping aside would allow an independent investigation into the allegations.

“I think if decorum prevails, there are a lot of things that need to be done. There is no way a public officer will be accused of something of this magnitude and he will still remain glued to his position.”

He argued that Gbajabiamila should relinquish both his position as Chief of Staff and his leadership role on the committee in question.

“Gbajabiamila needs to step aside, not just as the chairman of this important committee, but also his position as the Chief of Staff to the President. The right thing to do is for him to step aside for a proper independent probe into the allegation and let them prove beyond reasonable doubt that he is innocent.”

Gombe further criticised the Federal Government’s decision to appoint Gbajabiamila to chair the committee on state police harmonisation despite the ongoing controversy.

“How can the President justify setting up one of the most important committees in the life of this administration and nation and announce the same person accused of this magnitude of offence against the constitution of the land to lead this committee?”

He also raised concerns over the committee’s composition, alleging regional imbalance among its members and warning that such appointments could undermine national unity as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

The SDP chairman maintained that public officials facing serious allegations should step aside while investigations are conducted, insisting that many competent Nigerians are capable of handling such responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Lagos SDP Chairman and Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen, Femi Olaniyi, described the PFIPC controversy as unfortunate and criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“It’s something that is so disappointing. It was a big mess to all Nigerians… But in summary, this government of Bola Tinubu have lost track, control, and doesn’t even know where to go.”

He said he would not comment extensively on the PFIPC matter because it is already before a court.

Turning to the 2027 elections, Olaniyi urged party leaders to strengthen structures from the ward level upward, intensify membership recruitment, encourage voter registration and begin early mobilisation across the country.

“Take the SDP to the marketplaces and the streets… Let Nigeria feel the SDP before ballots are printed. The 2027 general election will be a referendum on Nigeria. Don’t disappoint Nigerians. The people are looking up to you.”
