Top US Official Quits Over Iran Conflict, Claims War Based on ‘Lie’

A senior official resigns from the Trump administration, claiming the Iran war was driven by pressure and misinformation, not an imminent threat.

The director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Joseph Kent, resigned on Tuesday in protest against the US-Israeli war with Iran, insisting that Tehran poses no immediate danger to the United States.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, Kent stated: “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran.”

A former Green Beret with multiple combat deployments, Kent argued that “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation,” adding that the conflict was driven by “pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

His departure makes him the first senior official in the Trump administration to resign over the war.

Reflecting on past US foreign policy, Kent wrote: “Until June of 2025, you understood that the wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation.”

He accused “high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media” of orchestrating “a misinformation campaign” that weakened Trump’s America First agenda and promoted pro-war sentiment.

“This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that should you strike now, there was a clear path to a swift victory,” he said.

Kent concluded that, “This was a lie and is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war,” adding, “I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.”
