US President Donald Trump delivered a highly charged speech to evangelical Christians on Friday, accusing Democrats of promoting “godless” communist ideas and warning that left-wing politics could destroy America.

Trump spoke at the Road to Majority conference in Washington, hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, where he addressed around 3,000 conservative evangelicals.

The president’s remarks came after progressive candidates performed strongly in New York’s Democratic primary elections earlier this week.

“These are not social democrats. These are hardcore, godless communists,” Trump declared.

“This is the most serious threat to our country since its existence.”

Trump described left-wing ideology as “an uncontrollable form of cancer” and claimed it would lead to America being “taken down.”

He also criticised former President Joe Biden’s administration, branding it “evil” and “incompetent.”

During the speech, Trump repeated false claims that the 2020 election was stolen and alleged without evidence that Biden had jailed Christians for praying.

The Republican leader highlighted several conservative initiatives from his administration, including policies recognising only two genders and the establishment of a White House faith office.

Trump additionally said he had helped protect Christians globally through military interventions in countries such as Nigeria.

The president also pushed for stricter voting laws while attacking Republicans who oppose the measures, singling out Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Trump argued that the Democratic Party had embraced communist ideology and warned Americans about the dangers of left-wing politics.

Despite facing multiple legal controversies and scandals, Trump continues to maintain strong support among evangelical Christians, many of whom view him as a key political ally.

The conference coincided with the fourth anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn nationwide abortion rights.

However, Trump avoided discussing abortion extensively, despite previously expressing concerns about strict abortion bans introduced in some Republican-led states.
