UK Coroner Rules Three Sisters Drowned in Brighton Sea in Joint Suicide
A UK coroner has ruled that three sisters who drowned in the sea at Brighton in May died by suicide after entering the water in adverse conditions.
A UK coroner has ruled that three sisters who drowned in the sea at Brighton, southern England, in May died by suicide.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday at an inquest into the deaths of Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31.
Their bodies were found in the sea in the early hours of May 13 as windy conditions prevailed in the area.
Coroner Penelope Schofield said the evidence indicated that the three women had intended to take their own lives.
The sisters, who shared a flat in London, had travelled to Brighton late in the evening in a taxi they had booked in advance. They were last seen alive on the beach at around 3:00 am before entering the water.
Schofield said they went into the sea in the dark when “sea conditions were adverse” and noted that “they could not swim”.
The coroner described the sisters as people who “lived very secluded lives” but said the circumstances behind their decision remained unclear.
“We don’t know why they took this course of action or indeed why they chose to do it in Brighton,” she said.
The inquest also heard that the sisters had visited the area a day before their deaths because it was where their mother had drowned herself in a lake 16 years earlier.
Police previously ruled out evidence of criminality, saying there was no indication that anyone else was involved. They also said the women had not visited any local businesses or nightclubs before their deaths.
