US Lawmaker Riley Moore Reiterates Push for Decentralised Policing in Nigeria Amid Security Concerns

US Congressman Riley Moore has called on Nigeria to empower state governments in policing, citing rising insecurity and the need for improved protection of citizens.

United States Congressman Riley Moore has reiterated his call for the decentralisation of Nigeria’s policing structure, arguing that state governments should assume greater responsibility in addressing local security challenges.

In a post shared on X, Moore urged the Federal Government to take stronger measures to safeguard citizens, especially communities in the Middle Belt, which he said have been impacted by violence linked to Islamic extremist groups.

Moore has maintained an active stance on Nigeria’s security situation, with a particular emphasis on alleged persecution of Christians and rising extremism—positions that align closely with the policy direction associated with former US President Donald Trump. By early 2026, he had led investigations, introduced legislative proposals, and called for increased accountability from Nigerian authorities.

His involvement has included leading a bipartisan delegation to Nigeria, where he engaged with victims of violence, religious leaders, and top government officials to better understand the situation on the ground.

Additionally, Moore has pushed for Nigeria’s reinstatement as a Country of Particular Concern, citing alleged widespread persecution of Christians. The designation was previously introduced by Trump on October 31, 2025.
