Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has lashed out at Peter Obi, accusing him of disrespecting the legacy of pro-democracy activists following controversial comments about Nigeria’s past military era.

Obi’s remarks came in response to developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and leadership issues within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In his statement, he suggested that late Head of State Sani Abacha might ultimately be seen as more democratic than some figures associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

“General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character,” Obi said.

The comment quickly drew backlash for appearing to downplay the abuses recorded during Abacha’s rule while criticising NADECO figures who opposed military governance.

In a strongly worded reaction posted on X, Fani-Kayode condemned Obi’s position as an affront to those who suffered during the struggle for democracy.

“You have totally and completely lost your mind and this post of yours will go down in infamy as the most consequential one you ever made. What you have written today is way beyond politics and you have assaulted the senses and wounded the sensitivities of all those who lost their lives, liberty and loved ones during the struggle against fascism, dictatorship and military rule,” he wrote.

He also referenced the sacrifices tied to the June 12 1993 Nigerian presidential election struggle, accusing Obi of trivialising them.

“To mock the memory of those that died fighting for democracy in the June 12 struggle and sacrificed their lives and liberty as members of NADECO in this way is unacceptable and unforgivable. Simply put, it is despicable,” he added.

Fani-Kayode went further, casting doubt on Obi’s political future: “For this reason alone you stand accursed before the world, you shall never become President of our nation and, as from today, your dwindling star shall be totally eclipsed and fade away until it is no more.”

The exchange adds to ongoing political tensions sparked by INEC’s decision on the ADC leadership crisis, which continues to generate intense debate nationwide.
