2027: Obi Urges Nigerians to Put Unity First, Protect Their Votes
Peter Obi says Nigeria needs a unifying president, urging voters to reject division, protect their votes and support free, fair and credible elections.
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, has called on Nigerians to prioritise national unity when choosing the country’s next president.
Obi said Nigeria’s divisions along ethnic and religious lines were hindering development, arguing that the country needed a leader capable of bringing Nigerians together and confronting insecurity.
The former Anambra State governor spoke during a global digital town hall held virtually on Sunday evening, where he engaged Nigerians at home and abroad on voter mobilisation, election security and ways of safeguarding the electoral process.
He urged his supporters to mobilise more voters and ensure that polling agents were available across the country, declaring that “Our country needs unity.”
In a statement issued on Monday by Idris Zekeri, spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Office, POMR, the NDC presidential candidate said the challenges confronting Nigerians cut across ethnic and religious boundaries.
“At present, we are not united. We are divided along ethnic and religious lines, yet, to the best of my knowledge, no tribe buys bread at a lower price, and no tribe buys fuel at a lower price. Similarly, no religion buys bread or fuel at a lower price. The poverty affecting our country today is widespread across the entire nation.
“No tribe enjoys greater security than another. Insecurity affects every part of the country. This is the same point I have consistently made.”
Obi said the country required a president who would unite its people and work tirelessly to guarantee national security.
He urged Nigerians to remain engaged in the 2027 electoral process and ensure that every vote is counted. He added that his campaign was working to expand its polling-agent network while collaborating with other political parties to support free, fair and credible elections.
The NDC candidate also warned voters against allowing financial inducements or intimidation to influence their choices, saying both could undermine their future.
He said, “If you accept money from them, that is money they would otherwise have spent on security, hospitals, and education.”
Speaking on the security situation, Obi called for increased support for security agencies, including the provision of adequate logistics and equipment to enable them to protect Nigerians effectively.
“We have security agencies, and they must function effectively. We must provide them with the logistics they need to perform their duties and ensure that we stand by them. We must make certain that they are properly equipped and that their families are cared for if anything happens to them or they become unavailable. We need a president who will lead from the front,” he said.
Obi further advised voters not to leave their polling units immediately after casting their ballots on election day. He urged them to stay until the votes had been counted, stressing that citizens must take an active role in protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
