Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks embarrassment if internal divisions prevent it from appearing on the 2027 election ballot.

Speaking at the party’s 2026 National Convention in Abuja, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Saraki emphasised that reconciliation efforts are crucial to preserving the party’s future.

“It would be a shame if, by an own goal… we’re not on that ballot,” he said, stressing the importance of providing a platform for aspirants.

Saraki acknowledged the difficulties encountered in rebuilding unity, noting that those involved in reconciliation efforts had faced criticism.
“It’s been a long journey… one had to take a lot of attacks,” he said.

However, he expressed relief at the turnout and the presence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which he said validated the convention.
“When I walked in here… I said Alhamdulillah,” he remarked.

He added that renewed confidence within the party is driving enthusiasm among members seeking political opportunities.
“They’re excited… because now they have a platform,” he noted.

On absent stakeholders, Saraki said reconciliation remains ongoing and urged them to return.
“I hope that the doors are not closed… I will continue to engage with them,” he said.

He concluded by urging party leaders to prioritise unity over personal grievances.
“The issues about we, the leaders, we should put it behind,” he said, highlighting the importance of supporting younger aspirants.
