Activities were temporarily disrupted on Monday at the oncology department of the National Hospital, Abuja, following a fire outbreak that led to the urgent evacuation of patients and medical staff.

Opinion Nigeria reports that the fire, believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault, was quickly contained before it could spread beyond the affected unit.

Patients in the oncology section, including those undergoing chemotherapy and emergency treatment, were relocated to safer areas within the hospital as emergency protocols were activated.

According to a witness, the incident began after persistent electrical instability in the unit, with power supply fluctuating repeatedly before a total outage occurred.

The witness further stated that a strong burning smell, suspected to be from electrical wiring, was noticed prior to the spread of smoke within the department.

Medical personnel and patients were immediately evacuated, while ongoing treatments were transferred to other parts of the hospital for continuity of care.

No casualties were recorded, but smoke was said to have remained in the area for hours, forcing a temporary suspension of operations in the oncology department.

Authorities at the hospital confirmed that no deaths or injuries occurred and said investigations are ongoing to establish the precise cause of the fire.
