ADC welcomes court verdict on INEC rules, says APC may face wave of defections

ADC says a court judgment on party primaries and membership registration rules has validated its position against INEC’s electoral guidelines.

The African Democratic Congress has applauded a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja that addressed the deadline for party primaries and other provisions in the electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the court’s decision supported the objections it had raised against some aspects of the guidelines when they were first introduced.

The party noted that it had challenged the rigid timelines relating to party membership registration and the scheduling of party primaries.

“The decision of the court on these issues, including those that directly contradict the constitution, is therefore a welcome vindication of our position,” the party stated.

ADC further argued that the judgment would encourage political participation by removing barriers affecting politicians interested in contesting elections on different party platforms.

“We believed at the time that that particular restriction was designed to prevent people from leaving the ruling party, APC,” the statement said.

“Now that the court has ruled against it, we are sure that, in the coming days, we will witness a mass exodus from the ruling party,” it added, in reference to the All Progressives Congress.
