Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta to retire after Sevilla stint
Cesar Azpilicueta will retire at the end of the season, bringing an end to a decorated career that included Premier League and Champions League titles with Chelsea.
Veteran Spanish defender César Azpilicueta has confirmed he will retire at the end of the current season.
Azpilicueta, who is currently with Sevilla FC, enjoyed a decorated career that included two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph with Chelsea F.C.. He also represented Spain national football team 44 times.
Speaking in a social media post on Friday, the 36-year-old said: “After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.”
He added: “I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
His final appearance is expected to come on Saturday when Sevilla take on RC Celta de Vigo.
Azpilicueta started his professional career with CA Osasuna before spells with Olympique de Marseille and Chelsea, whom he joined in 2012.
Highly regarded for his ability to operate across the backline, the Spaniard featured at right-back, left-back and centre-back throughout his career. He left Chelsea in 2023 for Atlético Madrid before moving to Sevilla in 2025.
