APC attacks Amaechi over mother’s medication claim, says he is unfit for VP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has questioned Rotimi Amaechi’s suitability to become vice-president in 2027, following the former Rivers State governor’s reported claim that he was unable to afford medication for his late mother.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, is the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Reacting to the reported comments, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, in a statement issued on Sunday, criticised Amaechi over his reported financial struggles since leaving public office.

The party first extended condolences to Amaechi over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, and wished the former governor good health.

The APC then turned its attention to what it described as Amaechi’s “uncanny confessions”, pointing to his reported comments about his financial condition.

“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed,” the party said.

“First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89.”

The APC said Amaechi had spent approximately four decades in public office, including serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor and Minister of Transportation.

“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the party alleged.

“Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”

The ruling party argued that the reported financial difficulties raised questions about Amaechi’s ability to sustain himself without the benefits of public office.

“If Amaechi is not struggling with some kind of Peter Pan syndrome, then he must be a loafer, aimless and irresponsible for his inability to be productive and earn a living outside the patronage of public office,” the APC said.

The party also took aim at Amaechi’s 2027 political ambitions, questioning why he was seeking the vice-presidency despite the financial difficulties he had reportedly disclosed.

“The same Rotimi Amaechi now asks Nigerians to make him vice president come 2027 so he can continue leeching on public treasury and keep the predatory lifestyle he has grown accustomed to,” the APC said.

It added: “The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi.”

The APC ultimately said Amaechi’s own reported statements provided the strongest argument against his suitability for the position.

“There can be no better speaker of Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of vice president than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the party said.
