Arsenal Face PSG Test as Champions League Crown Goes on the Line

PSG are aiming for consecutive Champions League titles, while Arsenal seek their first European crown against the French champions.

Arsenal will seek to dethrone defending champions Paris Saint-Germain when both sides meet in the Champions League final on Saturday in Budapest.

The French champions are targeting consecutive Champions League titles as they continue to thrive under coach Luis Enrique following the exits of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Since taking charge in 2023, Luis Enrique has transformed PSG into a cohesive and hard-working side, guiding them to their first European title last season after defeating Inter Milan in the final.

PSG had previously spent more than one billion euros under Qatar Sports Investments in pursuit of European success before finally lifting the trophy.

Arsenal’s progress under Mikel Arteta has been more gradual, with the Spanish coach carefully rebuilding the squad over several seasons.

Last summer, the Gunners strengthened key areas of the team, a move that helped them secure their first Premier League title in 22 years and return to Europe’s biggest club match for the first time since 2006.

PSG arrive in the final as the tournament’s most prolific attacking side, scoring 44 goals, while Arsenal possess the best defensive record after conceding just six goals in the competition.

Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue have been central to PSG’s attacking success, including their thrilling 6-5 aggregate semi-final victory over Bayern Munich.

Arsenal, however, have built their campaign on defensive discipline, with Gabriel, William Saliba, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka playing key roles throughout the season.

Luis Enrique praised both teams ahead of the final, describing them among Europe’s elite sides.

“I think we’re talking about two great teams –- along with Bayern Munich, the three best teams in Europe,” he said.

“We’ll have to adapt to play and defend in a different way compared to how we usually do if we want to get the better of them.”

PSG could also welcome back Achraf Hakimi and Dembele from injury concerns, while Arsenal remain uncertain over the fitness of defender Jurrien Timber.

Former Arsenal star Thierry Henry believes PSG’s experience gives them the advantage heading into the showdown at the Puskas Arena.

“We’re not at the level of those guys yet so you’ve got to be humble,” Henry said.

“Paris Saint-Germain have the experience of knowing what it is to win it.”

Still, Arsenal believe their recent Premier League triumph after years of near misses could inspire them to finally claim Europe’s biggest prize.

“They called us bottlers,” said Arsenal midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly during the club’s title celebrations. “And now we’re holding the bottle.”
