Beyond Certificates: The Power of Good Communication Skills -By Ogunbowale Tolulope Sobiye

In all, certificates may help you knock on the door, but communication invites you inside. It helps you build trust, earn respect, create opportunities and leave lasting impressions. So, while you work hard to earn certificates also invest in your communication skills. Read more, listen more, speak with confidence, and treat people with kindness. When knowledge and communication walk hand in hand, endless opportunities begin to unfold before you.

Have you ever wondered why some people with just one certificate seem to get better opportunities than others with several degrees? Have you asked yourself why two people with the same qualifications can end up in completely different places in life? Is success really about certificates alone? The answer is simple,  certificates are important but good communication is an added advantage.

There is no doubt that education matters. We all need certificates because they show that we have learnt something and are qualified for certain jobs. They can help us get invited for an interview or considered for an opportunity. But let us be honest, can your certificate answer questions for you during an interview? Can it convince a customer to buy your product? Can it settle a misunderstanding with a colleague? Certainly not. That is where communication comes in.

Good communication is not about speaking big grammar or trying to impress people with difficult words. It is simply the ability to express yourself clearly, listen carefully and treat people with respect. Sometimes, the simplest words leave the biggest impact. As the saying goes, “A gentle tongue can break a bone.” Kind and thoughtful words have a way of opening hearts.

Imagine two young graduates walking into the same interview room. Both have excellent results and impressive certificates. One answers questions calmly, smiles confidently and explains ideas in a way everyone understands. The other struggles to express simple thoughts despite having the same qualifications. If you were the employer, who would you choose? The answer is almost obvious. After all, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

It is no surprise that many employers today look beyond certificates. They want people who can communicate with customers, work peacefully with colleagues and solve problems without creating new ones. Technical knowledge is important, but if you cannot explain your ideas, your knowledge may remain hidden. What is the use of lighting a lamp and then covering it with a basket?

Good communication also helps us build lasting relationships. Life is not a journey we travel alone. We need friends, colleagues, neighbours, mentors, and even strangers along the way. A warm greeting, a sincere apology or a few  words of encouragement can open doors that money cannot open. Isn’t it amazing how one simple conversation can change someone’s opinion about you? Indeed, good words cost nothing, but they are worth more than gold.

The same principle applies to business. You may have the best product in the market, but if you cannot explain why people need it, how will they trust you? On the other hand, someone with average products but excellent communication skills can win loyal customers because people buy from those they trust. As people often say, first impressions last.

Communication is equally important when disagreements arise. Misunderstandings are part of life, but must every disagreement become an argument? Of course not. Those who know when to speak and when to keep quiet often prevent small problems from becoming big ones. They understand that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Respectful words calm angry hearts, while harsh words only add fuel to the fire.

Communication  builds confidence. People who communicate well are not afraid to ask questions, share ideas or speak before an audience. They seize opportunities instead of watching them pass by. Fortune favours the bold but boldness begins with believing in your voice.

None of this means certificates are unimportant. They remain valuable because they give us knowledge and prepare us for our careers. However, knowledge becomes truly useful when it is shared in a way people can understand. Knowledge is power but communication gives that power influence.
