CP Sanusi’s Reforms: A Timely Reset For Policing In The FCT -By Adewole Kehinde

CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi has proven himself to be a round peg in the round hole of the FCT Police Command. His reforms, discipline-driven leadership, and commitment to professional policing are setting a new standard, one that, if sustained, will significantly enhance security and public confidence in the nation’s capital.

CP Ahmed Sanusi

The recent decision by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD., fcai., to comply fully with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, by harmonizing all Tactical Teams into a single, streamlined unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), deserves both commendation and public support.

This reform is not merely administrative; it is strategic. By consolidating multiple tactical formations into one coordinated unit, the FCT Police Command is taking a bold step toward improved transparency. Fragmented structures often create room for opacity, duplication of duties, and blurred lines of accountability. The VCRU model, on the other hand, establishes a clear command structure that makes oversight more effective and performance easier to evaluate.

Equally important is the efficiency this harmonization introduces. A unified tactical unit reduces bureaucratic delays and enhances rapid response capabilities. In a city like Abuja, where security demands are dynamic and often unpredictable, such operational cohesion is not just beneficial, it is necessary.

The move also boosts reliability and strengthens public confidence, as residents can now relate to a more coordinated and professional policing system.

Furthermore, simplifying internal operations within the Command cannot be overstated. Police officers are better positioned to focus on core duties when institutional confusion is minimized. This translates directly into improved service delivery and a more disciplined force.

CP Sanusi’s leadership has also been marked by a visible strengthening of security operations across the Federal Capital Territory. Since assuming office, he has demonstrated a firm commitment to professionalism, consolidating gains already recorded in crime reduction while pushing for higher standards within the force.

His approach reflects not only administrative competence but also a deep understanding of modern policing requirements.

One of the most commendable aspects of his tenure is the reported drastic reduction in cases of extortion, harassment of members of the public, and other forms of misconduct. For many residents, these issues have long eroded trust in law enforcement. Addressing them head-on signals a cultural shift within the Command, one that prioritizes integrity and accountability.

In this regard, the directive to the Commander of the X-Squad to intensify monitoring and enforcement operations against unprofessional conduct is both timely and necessary. Internal discipline remains the backbone of any credible police institution.

It is encouraging to note that under CP Sanusi’s watch, no officer is to be shielded from scrutiny. Any personnel found wanting must be promptly arrested and subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures. This zero-tolerance stance is essential for restoring and sustaining public trust.

However, policing is a shared responsibility. While the Commissioner continues to instill discipline within the ranks, residents of the FCT must also play their part. Cooperation with the Police and other security agencies remains critical in maintaining peace and security. Community engagement, timely reporting of suspicious activities, and respect for law enforcement processes all contribute to a safer environment.

At the same time, the growing influence of social media must be handled responsibly. Access to digital platforms should not become a tool for spreading misinformation or inciting unnecessary confrontations.

The Nigeria Police have a duty to enforce laws against cybercrime, and this responsibility must be supported by citizens who value truth and stability over sensationalism.

In conclusion, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi has proven himself to be a round peg in the round hole of the FCT Police Command. His reforms, discipline-driven leadership, and commitment to professional policing are setting a new standard, one that, if sustained, will significantly enhance security and public confidence in the nation’s capital.
