Babagana Zulum has confirmed that two suspected suicide bombers remain at large in Maiduguri following coordinated blasts that killed 23 people and wounded about 100 others.

Speaking to BBC News Pidgin, Zulum said intelligence shows five suicide bombers entered the state, but only three have carried out their attacks.

The explosions targeted the Post Office, Monday Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate on Monday evening, coinciding with the Muslim Ramadan fast-breaking period. The military has blamed Boko Haram militants for the attacks.

“We’ve got solid intelligence that five suicide bombers made it into Maiduguri. Three have already detonated their devices,” the governor said.

“We’re tracking the remaining two right now… By God’s grace, we’ll stop those last two before they can strike.”

Zulum, who was in Saudi Arabia when he learned of the blasts, expressed his sorrow and reassured residents.

“As the governor and chief security officer of Borno, it hit me hard. My prayers are with the victims and their families. This madness will end,” he said.

Since his return, the governor has convened urgent meetings with the military and security chiefs to control the situation and prevent further attacks.
