Egbetokun and Mike Okiro

The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has strongly refuted a recent report by The Supreme News, which claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accused former IGP Mike Okiro of usurping his official functions.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, SWYA described the report as “misleading, false, and reckless,” asserting that the IGP never made such an accusation.

“At no time did IGP Egbetokun make such an accusation against the respected elder statesman and former police chief,” the statement read. “The report is not only baseless but also appears to be a calculated attempt to create disunity within the Nigeria Police Force and mislead the general public.”

The group urged Nigerians and media organisations to disregard the publication in its entirety, stressing that it lacked substance, verification, and credibility.

SWYA further warned that such “irresponsible journalism” undermines national institutions and disrespects the legacies of past leaders who have played critical roles in strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

While expressing solidarity with the leadership of the police, the group commended IGP Egbetokun for maintaining composure and professionalism in the face of what it described as “unwarranted distractions.”

“We commend IGP Egbetokun for his calm and focused leadership, which continues to promote professionalism, integrity, and meaningful reform within the Force,” the statement added.

SWYA also called on The Supreme News to retract the report and issue a public apology to both the incumbent and former IGPs in the interest of truth, accountability, and responsible journalism.

The group reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Police Force in its ongoing efforts to uphold law, order, and public trust across the country.
