OSOGBO — Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has accused his predecessor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, of being behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) decision to freeze the state government’s account.

The allegation was made on Tuesday at the Arise Town Hall organised for candidates contesting the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15.

Adeleke alleged that Oyetola had been using his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, as well as the influence of federal institutions, to pressure his administration.

He claimed that Oyetola had made several demands and allegedly told government agencies that their actions were being taken on the instructions of the President.

“I am sure he (Oyetola) told EFCC to freeze our account, that Mr. President said it should be frozen,” Adeleke said.

According to the governor, the matter took a different turn when President Tinubu personally reached out to him. Adeleke said Tinubu expressed shock and embarrassment over the development.

“So, when Mr President called, a lot of people were shocked. Because when Mr President called, he said he was embarrassed. He said it is not acceptable because I told him, the President, that he would not want democracy to go down; he wants a free and fair election,” Adeleke said.

The governor also alleged that Oyetola was exploiting his relationship with Tinubu for political purposes in Osun State.

Adeleke further claimed that his predecessor had continued to feel the impact of losing the 2022 governorship election and was now allegedly using federal influence against his administration.

“Oyetola is feeling that pain of defeat. He is only using the President to vow that he will destroy Osun State. He is using federal might,” the governor alleged.

The political rivalry between Adeleke and Oyetola dates back to the 2022 Osun governorship election, when Adeleke defeated Oyetola, who was seeking another term as the incumbent governor.

Adeleke is contesting the August 15 poll in an effort to secure another four years in office.
