PDP Wants Jonathan to ‘Carry the Coffin,’ Not Save the Party — Shehu Sani

Former senator Shehu Sani criticised the PDP faction backing Goodluck Jonathan, saying the party should have fielded him in 2023.

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, says the recent move by a faction of the PDP to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate is more about reviving the party’s fortunes than offering him a realistic chance at returning to office.

Reacting via his X handle on Monday, Sani questioned why Jonathan was not considered for the party’s presidential ticket in 2023 when, according to him, the PDP was in a much stronger position.

“If they actually wanted GEJ, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape,” he stated.

The former senator suggested that the latest effort reflects the challenges facing the opposition party and its search for a prominent figure capable of restoring public confidence.

“They just now want him to help them carry the coffin,” Sani added.

His comments come after a PDP faction led by Kabiru Turaki adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election, a move that has continued to generate reactions across the political landscape.
